Empowering Communities Through Local Ownership of Missions

Home > Locally Sustained Community Development > Empowering Communities Through Local Ownership of Missions

In the heart of Kenya, Mission to Unreached People (MUPE) is working tirelessly to address physical and spiritual poverty in the country. Through its team of dedicated missionaries, MUPE focuses on empowering communities through education, health, and church development. However, the organization has historically struggled to cover the costs of their ministry and to provide opportunities for their missionaries to generate an income.

Murecars, a car rental project headed up by MUPE, was launched in the summer of 2021 with the goal of changing all that. The project, which now has four cars available for rental, provides MUPE with a sustainable source of income to continue their vital work in the community. By renting out cars to the staff of other non-governmental organizations, business people and tourists, MUPE has been able to generate the funds needed to expand their ministry and reach even more people in need. In fact, a fourth car was purchased by MUPE out of the profits of the business, not by Mission ONE. MUPE continues to grow and expand.

Murecars is about more than just generating income for MUPE. It’s also about empowering the community and providing job opportunities for local residents. The project is overseen by Sammy, the adopted son of MUPE’s founders, who recently graduated from business school and wants to give back to the community. He employs individuals from the communities where MUPE is active, providing them with a reliable source of income and a chance to build a better future for themselves and their families.

Murecars is a perfect example of the power of local ownership of missions. By working closely with the community, MUPE is able to create a sustainable solution that not only addresses the immediate needs of the community but also provides a long-term solution for the financial needs of the ministry. We believe that walking alongside our partners in ministry is crucial and that’s why we’re excited to see them raise financial support locally through business as mission.

We are proud to support MUPE in their mission and we believe that Murecars is an innovative solution that will have a real impact in the lives of marginalized communities. We believe that Murecars is a great way to support the work of Mission ONE and we encourage you to consider renting a car from Murecars the next time you’re in Kenya.
