Niger

Niger is considered one of the hottest nations. It is known as the “Frying Pan of the World,” and yet most of its people survive on crops and livestock. The country is named after the Niger River that bends and weaves through the country.

KEY CHALLENGES

Niger is rated by the UN as one of the world’s least developed nations. Having a history of political instability, Niger continues to experience ongoing conflict. Recurring terrorist attacks from Boko Haram in certain regions has caused instability. Militant groups abducted about 100 children in 2018, and hundreds of thousands of people have left their homes to escape the threat of harm. Basic rights issues, such as slavery (which was only banned in 2003 and still remains a problem), and high rates of illiteracy and disease remain significant challenges.

our approach

We were never intended to live in poverty, divided against one another, with little hope for peace. In the Kingdom of God, poverty, violence, division, and hopelessness will not exist. We think that the Church is God’s primary transforming agent in the world. The local church is there to make its community more like the Kingdom of God.

Our partners

Our partnering organization in North Africa have served over 40,000 individuals in need of dental and optical care. Their entire team of trained medical professionals are also coordinating regular discipleship trainings to meet the physical and spiritual needs of their community. By hosting these trainings in the local villages, they have created an approachable setting for people to hear and interact with the gospel. Mission ONE has partnered with the North Africa team since 2016.

PROJECTS

Our partners have established many clinics which serve the community mentally, physically, and spiritually. They are also helping the community grow their capacity to move out of poverty into their God-given potential. They train pastors and missionaries through an extensive network of local churches and emphasize freedom from bondage through Christ.

Gospel Context

People living in North Africa often live by a strict societal code marked by hospitality, reciprocity, and family honor. The idea that God would accept his son even after experiencing much public shame is challenging and attractive to many.
